Excelsior Springs Area Career Center (ESACC) is actively recruiting a Carpentry/Construction Technology instructor for the 2022-2023 school year. This person will, through hands-on training and classroom instruction, be able to directly impact high school juniors and seniors in both on the job and life skills. The preferred candidate has a minimum of three years full-time residential/commercial carpentry work experience. Electrical wiring and plumbing experience are preferred but not mandatory. The applicant must be able to develop, maintain, and implement lesson plans that encompass general construction skills, workplace readiness and professionalism. The applicant must be able to collaborate with other teachers on integration of subject matter with academics. 

 

Course Description

This course covers construction techniques of residential and commercial construction. Students will be involved in multiple areas of construction throughout the course of the year as part of the curriculum.  Students will gain valuable hands-on experience under the supervision of a qualified instructor including trade specific skills and employability skills that will transfer directly into the construction trades or higher education.  Numerous opportunities are available every year and range from small individual shop projects to off campus building projects. Students are encouraged to participate in job shadows during their junior and senior year,  as well as internships their senior year.  Students have the opportunity to earn OSHA authorized 10- hour construction safety cards and other credentials through Career Connections.

 

Qualifications:  

  • Teaching Credential: A valid teaching certificate is preferred, but not required. A candidate can achieve Career & Technical Education           (CTE) teacher certification within the first three years through additional education.   • The preferred candidate has a minimum of three years full-time residential/commercial carpentry work experience. Electrical wiring and        plumbing experience are preferred but not mandatory. 
  • Associates Degree preferred, Bachelor’s Degree is a plus.

REPORTS TO: Director

 

JOB GOAL: To assist students in learning the appropriate subject matter, skills and/or attitudes that will contribute to their development as responsible citizens.

 

Key Functions: 

  • Assess individual student’s current level of functioning to determine needs.  
  • Design and implement instructional programs to meet student’s needs.  
  • Develop lesson plans and instructional materials using community resources and alternative approaches to learning to teach students          the knowledge, skills and behaviors necessary to function in the community.  
  • Work with industry partners to establish, coordinate and monitor students in regular workplace assignments.  
  • Ability to ensure student relevance to the curriculum as it relates to both subject matter and industry standards.  
  • Keep records of student performance and attendance and evaluates students’ academic growth.  
  • Identify student needs and cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping students solve health, attitude           and learning problems.  
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to provide a safe, healthy, orderly and productive classroom environment. 
  • Maintain student confidentiality.  
  • Willingness to attend professional development activities outside of the standard teaching assignment. 
  • Willingness and ability to develop and maintain industry contacts.
