Single-family home building permit activity once again surpassed the activity reported during December 2020, contributing to a 22 percent increase in permit activity for 2021 compared to activity reported in 2020. 

During December 2021, 653 single-family permits were issued compared to 461 issued in December 2020. Throughout the year, 6,545 single-family permits were issued. By comparison, year-end single-family permit activity for 2020 totaled 5,366. This is the most single-family permits issued in a year since 2018. 

Kansas City, Mo., led the metropolitan area as the top-permitting city with 952 single-family permits issued during 2021. Coming in second for the year was Lee’s Summit, with 720 single-family permits issued. Close behind was Olathe with 719 permits issued in 2021. 

Rounding out the top-permitting cities for the year are Overland Park, 658, and Raymore with 274 permits issued in 2021.
